Vape cartridges are the fastest-growing product category in Michigan dispensaries. They're discreet, portable, and deliver consistent doses — but the wall of options at any dispensary can be overwhelming. This guide breaks down what you're actually buying, what the price differences mean, and how to avoid wasting money on bad carts.
Not all vape cartridges are created equal. The type of oil inside determines the flavor, potency, and price. Here's what you'll find at Michigan dispensaries:
Distillate is the most common and affordable option. The cannabis oil is refined to isolate THC, typically hitting 80-95% THC. The downside: distillation strips out terpenes and other cannabinoids, so manufacturers add terpenes back in — sometimes cannabis-derived, sometimes botanical (plant-based).
Price range: $15-30 per 1g cart at Michigan dispensaries. This is the budget-friendly choice and what most daily deals feature.
Live resin is made from cannabis that was flash-frozen immediately after harvest, preserving the full terpene profile. The result is a cart that tastes like the actual plant and delivers a more nuanced, full-spectrum high. THC percentages are typically 70-85%, but the entourage effect from preserved terpenes means the experience often feels stronger than distillate despite the lower number.
Price range: $25-45 per 1g cart. Worth the premium if you care about flavor and a more natural effect profile.
Live rosin is the solventless option. Instead of using chemical solvents like butane or CO2 to extract the oil, live rosin uses only heat and pressure. It's considered the cleanest and most premium vape product. Flavor is exceptional, and purists swear by it.
Price range: $40-70 per 1g cart. This is the top shelf of the vape world.
CO2 extraction sits between distillate and live resin. It preserves more of the plant's original terpene profile than distillation but doesn't quite match the flavor of live resin. A solid middle-ground option.
Price range: $20-35 per 1g cart.

There are two main hardware formats in the Michigan market:
The industry standard. These screw onto any 510-thread battery, which you can buy at any dispensary for $10-25. The advantage: universal compatibility. You buy one battery and can use carts from any brand. Most dispensary deals feature 510 carts.
Some brands (like Stiiizy, Pax, and Plug Play) use their own pod format that only works with their specific battery. The upside is sometimes better vapor quality and a sleeker device. The downside: you're locked into that brand's ecosystem, and pods tend to cost more per gram.
Tip: If you're new to vaping, start with a 510-thread setup. The battery costs $10-15 and works with 90% of the carts on any dispensary shelf. You're not locked in, and you can shop deals across all brands.
Michigan has strict testing requirements for vape cartridges, but quality still varies. Here's what to look for:
Vape cartridges are one of the easiest categories to overspend on. Here's how to keep costs down:
After the 2019 vaping health crisis (caused by vitamin E acetate in illicit carts), Michigan implemented some of the strictest vape testing requirements in the country. Every legal vape cart sold in Michigan must be tested for:
The single most important safety rule: only buy from licensed dispensaries. The black market still exists, and illicit carts don't undergo any testing. The $10 you save isn't worth the risk. Every cart you buy from a Michigan dispensary has passed mandatory safety screening.
