Indica vs Sativa vs Hybrid: Does It Actually Matter?
October 9, 2026 · GREENLINE
Every dispensary menu is divided into indica, sativa, and hybrid. But the science says these labels are mostly meaningless for predicting effects.
The Traditional Story
Indica: relaxing, body high, couch lock, sleepy. “In da couch”
Sativa: energizing, cerebral, creative, uplifting
Hybrid: somewhere in between
This classification comes from plant morphology (indicas are short and bushy, sativas are tall and thin). It was never about effects.
What Science Says
Genetic studies show that modern strains are so heavily crossbred that the indica/sativa distinction is botanically meaningless. A strain labeled “indica” might be genetically closer to a “sativa” than to other “indicas.”
CBD ratio: higher CBD = less anxiety, more body relaxation
Your biology: the same strain affects different people differently based on endocannabinoid system genetics
How to Actually Choose
For relaxation/sleep: look for strains high in myrcene and linalool terpenes, with moderate THC (15–22%)
For energy/focus: look for strains high in limonene and pinene, with lower THC or balanced THC:CBD
For pain: higher THC + CBD combinations, strains with caryophyllene terpene
For anxiety: low THC (10–15%), higher CBD, linalool-dominant terpene profile
Practical advice: ignore the indica/sativa label. Read the terpene profile on the label (Michigan requires it). Start with low THC if you’re new, and ask your budtender about terpenes, not categories.
