Walking into a dispensary for the first time can be intimidating. There’s a security check, a waiting room, display cases full of products you don’t recognize, and a budtender asking what you’re looking for. Here’s exactly what to expect at a Michigan dispensary so you can walk in confident.
Before You Go
What to Bring
Valid government-issued photo ID. Driver’s license, state ID, or passport. You must be 21+ for recreational. Every person entering must show ID — no exceptions, even if you look 50.
Cash. Most Michigan dispensaries accept cash, debit cards (processed as ATM withdrawals with a small fee), and some accept CanPay or other cannabis-specific payment apps. Credit cards are not accepted (federal banking restrictions).
Your phone. Many dispensaries have online menus you can browse beforehand. Check the dispensary’s website or Weedmaps/Leafly listing for current inventory and prices.
Choosing a Dispensary
Use GREENLINE to compare prices across nearby dispensaries. Prices for the same product can vary $5–15 between dispensaries within a few miles. Also check for first-time customer deals — many dispensaries offer 10–20% off your first purchase.
What to Expect Inside
Step 1: Check-In
You’ll enter a lobby/waiting area and show your ID to a receptionist. They’ll verify your age and may scan your ID into their system. This is a state requirement — they’re not keeping your personal information for marketing. You might wait a few minutes if it’s busy.
Step 2: The Sales Floor
Once called, you’ll enter the sales area. Most dispensaries display products in cases or on shelves. Some let you smell flower in jars. A budtender (the dispensary equivalent of a bartender) will help you.
It’s completely fine to say: “This is my first time. I don’t know what I want.” Budtenders help first-timers all day long. They’ll ask what kind of experience you’re looking for (relaxation, energy, pain relief, sleep, social) and recommend products accordingly.
Step 3: Choosing Products
Product categories you’ll see:
Flower: Traditional cannabis buds. Sold by the gram, eighth (3.5g), quarter (7g), half (14g), or ounce (28g). Smoke it in a pipe, bong, joint, or dry herb vaporizer.
Pre-rolls: Pre-made joints. Convenient but sometimes made from lower-quality trim. Ask if they’re made from whole flower.
Vape cartridges: Pre-filled cartridges for battery-powered vape pens. Discreet and convenient.
Concentrates: Wax, shatter, live resin, rosin. Very potent. Not recommended for beginners.
Tinctures: Liquid cannabis drops placed under the tongue. Precise dosing, faster onset than edibles.
Topicals: Creams and balms for localized pain. Don’t produce a high.
Step 4: Checkout
Your total will include Michigan’s cannabis taxes: 10% excise tax + 6% sales tax = 16% total tax on recreational purchases. A $40 product costs $46.40 after tax. Medical card holders pay only the 6% sales tax (no excise tax).
Questions to Ask the Budtender
Good questions that help you get better recommendations:
“What’s your most popular product for [relaxation/energy/sleep]?”
“What would you recommend for someone who’s never tried cannabis?”
“What’s the difference between these two strains?”
“Do you have anything with a lower THC percentage?”
“What’s your first-time customer deal?”
Michigan-Specific Rules
Purchase limits: 2.5 ounces of flower per transaction (recreational). You can visit multiple dispensaries in a day, but total possession limit is 2.5 ounces in public.
Consumption: Not allowed in public, in a car, or within sight/smell of public areas. Private property only (with the owner’s permission).
Driving: Driving under the influence of cannabis is illegal in Michigan, same as alcohol. There is no legal THC blood level for driving (any impairment counts).
Home growing: Adults 21+ can grow up to 12 plants at home for personal use (recreational).
